Because essential oils are pure plant oils, they are easily absorbed by our skin or inhaled through our nose and into our bloodstream. Once In our bloodstream, they interact with our bodies’ chemistry and are transported to where they are needed within our bodies. From my experience, steam inhalation using a bowl of hot water is the fastest way to get essential oils working in your body. This method is mostly used to ease cold symptoms, ease body tension or as part of a facial routine.

Only Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils are safe to use undiluted directly on your skin. And that only applies to a small area, such as an insect bite or sting, or applying a drop to your temples for headaches. For all other essential oils and other applications, use 1 drop per teaspoon of carrier oil as a guide (a carrier or base oil is usually a vegetable oil that will allow the essential oil to absorb into your skin. Common household carrier oils are Olive oil and Coconut oil. Don’t use mineral oil such as baby oil as this isn’t absorbed or beneficial for the skin). Other applications include adding to a hot or cold compress and applying as required, using with water in an oil burner or diffuser, adding to unscented body lotion or oil (as above), adding a few drops to your bath or footbath.

Apply washing up liquid first and use an old sponge/scourer to clean, then wash with warm soapy water, rinse and dry.

Yes, they are safe, although common sense is required. Don’t spray directly close to or onto pets (not that anyone would, but just in case). Pets have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, so just bear this in mind and don’t spray excessively while they are in the same room.
