The Tonic – Dandelion & Burdock was originally a tonic drink, this pair made the perfect cleansing duo and would have been used to cleanse and detox the body. Burdock is known as a blood purifier. It removes toxins, helps skin conditions and generally ‘cleans’. Dandelion is a natural diuretic, so flushes away the toxins that the Burdock has shifted. It alleviates water retention and puffiness as well as being rich in potassium and other minerals. A perfect duo for a skin cleanser!

The Tonic – The Elder tree was known as the witches tree and was very useful for many tonics (the berries for cough syrup). The flowers would have been used to make a tea which was drunk hot to combat colds and fevers, or cold for menopause hot flushes, fluid retention and hayfever symptoms. It was also used as a skin wash. It’s very refreshing and mildly astringent, so tightens the skin and helps minimise pores. Comfrey, also known as Knitbone for it’s extraordinary healing properties, is added as it contains allantoin which is the substance that promotes new skin cells and heals soft tissue and bones. The Tonic – Thistle (Safflower) is known for liver support and Arthritis, it’s high in flavonoids (anti-oxidant) which make it good for skincare. Sea Buckthorn is high in omega 7 (rare to find in plants) and beta carotene and it was used for convalescing, mouth inflammation and ulcers as it supports the mucous membranes. More recently in the 20th century, it’s been recognized for its many vitamins and minerals and used for skin conditions including UV damage, Psoriasis and Eczema. Horse Chestnut was used for vascular complaints and is beneficial for reducing the appearance of thread veins. Manuka, while not a native remedy in the UK is exceptional at everything! The tree is known as the medicine tree in its native New Zealand and Australia. It’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Calendula and Chamomile were used for healing, cooling and soothing and are great for any skin condition.
