What are anti-oxidants?
Anti-Oxidants are often mentioned in skincare, but what are they? They’re in our Rose Hip Multi-Vit Facial Elixir.
The berries of this prickly bush are bright orange, rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants. They are a superfood, especially good for skin conditions, digestive issues and a common cold treatment. Sea Buckthorn contains more beta carotene (vitamin A) than is found in carrots, and has more vitamin C than an orange. It’s high in Omega 3 & 7 (rarely found in plants) and also contains potassium and quercetin (this lowers histamine that causes allergic reactions) as well as other nutrients. It has excellent anti-inflammatory properties, is healing and balancing. Sea Buckthorn can be taken as a supplement as well as applied topically.
So lets look at the benefits in skincare and what made me choose Sea Buckthorn as one of my skincare ingredients. In my mid to late 40’s I started to suffer from rosacea which after a few ‘flare-ups’ of redness, developed into acne rosacea. My skin was very dry and flaky, red and irritated with red bumps and spots, some very large. The red spots could last weeks and I was desperate for help. The cream my GP prescribed stung, and as a holistic therapist, I preferred natural remedies.
I started looking at my diet and my research led to a book called The Clear Skin Cookbook, by Dale Pinnock, who is a medicinal chef. This very informative book gives the vitamins and minerals our skin needs and why, as well as providing lots of information on different skin conditions. It’s worth a read, even if you only get the odd spot or you’re just interested in how the skin ages. The healthy skin food recipes are good too. There’s also an abundance of information on his website. Rosacea for example, benefits from brightly coloured fruit and vegetables that are high in anti-oxidants. From my Aromatherapy knowledge, I knew sea buckthorn oil contained a large amount of Beta carotene as well as other skin healing properties such as Omega 3 & 7. I decided to make a moisturiser with Sea Buckthorn as a key ingredient that would benefit sensitive skin prone to redness. After years of experimenting, I developed Little Pot of Gold that also contains other key ingredients for skin health. Sea buckthorn can also be found in our Rose Hip Multi-Vit Elixir
